Oh the Weather Outside is Frightful

Its been just over two weeks and there has not been much visible progress. The wet and snowy weather has delayed some of the next steps in the process therefore there are no additional pictures on this post. The next steps planned include:
- Backfilling the dirt around the new basement
- Pouring the floor for the new basement
- Starting to work on the framing for the addition

We are hoping that the weather will be a little more cooperative (although probably still cold) and that some of these next steps can begin this week.

The Walls on the Basement are Up.

The blocks arrived for the basement walls on a rainy day early in the week.

A fork lift took them from the street to the back of the house. The grass has seen better days.

They started work and got quite a bit done in one day

They came back and finished it up the next day. It's really starting to look like something now.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hopefully everyone had a happy Thanksgiving. Between the weather and the holiday last week not much progress was made, but they did pour the cement. They also laid all the pipes to the sump-pump (that black thing in the top right corner of the first picture). Finally, they filled it all in with rocks.

The next picture has little boys peeking out the window (which they opened to tell me I should not be climbing on the piles of dirt in the backyard).

Digging Complete

The digging is now complete and we have approval from the township to pour the foundation. The wood molds are all in place and we are scheduled for the cement truck to arrive on Monday November 19th. Here are some pictures from the digging.

The side of the house - they put down some stones to make it easier to get the digger and dump trucks in the back yard.

Digging Has Begun

While we were away in Florida the patio was removed and the digging started. We returned home to a big digger in the backyard and a pretty big hole. The digging will continue this week.

Trees are Gone

Craig could not quite finish the job he started so the tree guys came in to clean up the mess. They removed a big pine tree by the fireplace, the rest of the crab apple that Craig started cutting down and the two plum trees in the backyard. They also took away all the limbs that Craig had laying around the backyard.

The excavation was meant to start the week of October 22nd, but was delayed due to all the rain. They now hope to begin sometime this week (the week of October 29th).

Contract Signed

WELCOME TO THE VANDENBERG CONSTRUCTION BLOG.

Check back on a regular basis to monitor the progress on our addition.

The contract was signed today (Saturday October 13th) and the start date is planned for Monday October 22nd. The work is expected to take 18 weeks (thats a target completion of the end of February for those trying to do the math in their head).

For those that dont know - we are adding a new family room onto the back of our house and remodeling the kitchen. The current dining room is being changed into an extention of the kitchen with a window seat in the front of the house and a desk area for the computer. The current family room is being changed into the eating area. The addition will also have a basement with Bilco doors for easier access.

Here is the architect drawing of the house and additions

Here are some pictures of the house in its current state.

In an effort to save some money Craig decided to cut down the shrubs around the existing patio and the big crab apple tree by the patio this afternoon. Now we just need to figure out how to get all this stuff to the dump.
